Kinkaku-ji (The Golden Pavilion) is a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. Officially named Rokuon-ji, it was originally built in 1397 as the retirement villa of shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and later became a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect.
