This is quicklime, which reacts with water to reach boiling point without heat. Our ancestors discovered that burning stones or shells in a kiln extracted this substance. Here, lime is being used to make limewash, used for centuries on buildings as a water resistant barrier. The lime is mixed with water and then sieved to remove the unburnt bits of limestone.
