Sharaa’s interim government has been trying to court the international community to encourage investment and ease sanctions to allow Syria’s economy to recover.

The EU on Monday lifted a number of economic sanctions on Syria, after the fall of Bashar Assad's regime late last year. “We will go forward with the suspension of sanctions against Syria,” the EU's foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said before a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels. “This includes the transport, energy and banking sectors.”

The European Union is set to suspend Syria sanctions related to energy, transport and reconstruction, according to a draft declaration seen by Reuters.

EU also lifted asset freezes on five banks, eased restrictions on Syria’s central bank, and extended indefinitely an exemption designed to support the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top diplomat, said that the decision to lift sanctions is “immediate and open-ended” but warned that it “can be reversed if Syria's new rulers backtrack [on] their commitments”.
