The group of six who accidentally floated to Dillon Falls on the Deschutes River near Bend were in inner tubes tied together and included a Texas woman who had just celebrated her 40th birthday and a 33-year-old woman from Florida, authorities said Tuesday.
The Lower Passaic River has a history of pollution that stretches back into the 1950s. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA ), the river was polluted by byproducts from the chemical herbicide Agent Orange—a substance best known for its use by the American military in the Vietnam War.

More information on the cause of the deadly Fall River fire at Gabriel House on July 13 was released Tuesday. During a press conference Tuesday afternoon, officials said evidence narrowed the cause down to two possibilities, either an electrical or mechanical failure of an oxygen concentrator or the improper use or disposal of smoking materials.
The Milwaukee Police Department recovered a body from the Milwaukee River on July 21, following a search that began the previous night. The person jumped into the water on the 100 block of North Water Street at about 10:44 p.m. on July 20, the department said in an email. The body was recovered the next day at about 12:45 p.m.
Water levels on the Arkansas River have returned to normal after months of high water and fast flows that impeded commercial and recreational use of the waterway. The change has left local port officials and recreational boaters hopeful despite commercial tonnage on the river being down nearly 20% compared to last year.
