Hamas - which is proscribed as a terrorist organisation by Israel, the US, UK and other countries - denounced Israel's decision as a "blatant violation" of the deal and warned US, Qatari and Egyptian mediators that there could be no talks on extending the ceasefire until the prisoners were released.

Hamas has said that it will only continue ceasefire talks with Israel if Palestinian prisoners are released as part of the earlier truce deal. This comes after Israel delayed the release of 600 Palestinian prisoners on Sunday.

Gaza Hamas says it is delaying further negotiations with Israel until 620 Palestinian detainees, who were supposed to be released on Saturday, are handed over, placing the fragile Gaza ceasefire in jeopardy as violence escalates in the occupied West Bank.

Israel said its troops will remain in parts of the West Bank for a year and tens of thousands of Palestinians who have fled will not be able to return.
