Lucid's share price is on the move. Here's what its partnership with Uber and Nuro means for the future of transportation.

Uber (UBER) is betting big on robotaxis, with pure-play electric vehicle maker Lucid (LCID) as its partner. The two companies, along with autonomous tech firm Nuro (NURO.PVT), announced on Thursday morning a “next-generation premium global robotaxi program” exclusively for the Uber platform.

Uber is investing hundreds of millions of dollars into Lucid and autonomous vehicle technology startup Nuro in a bid to launch its own robotaxi service.

Uber Technologies Inc. is teaming up with electric vehicle maker Lucid Group Inc. and self-driving tech startup Nuro to launch a robotaxi fleet.

Uber will acquire and deploy over 20,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs that will be equipped with autonomous vehicle technology from startup Nuro.

Riders can hail a Waymo across 90 square miles of Austin, including neighborhoods like Crestview, Windsor Park and Franklin Park and locations like The Domain and McKinney Falls State Park.

“With recent growth in Austin and California, plus opening in Atlanta with Uber, Waymo now serves more than 700 sq mi across the US,” the company said. According to Waymo, it has driven over 100 million fully autonomous miles without a human behind the wheel.

Waymo robotaxis are now available exclusively on the Uber app in Atlanta. It’s the second city after Austin host the companies’ burgeoning partnership.

Waymo more than doubled its robotaxi service area in Austin just days after Tesla showed off a phallic-shaped service area expansion in the city.

Waymo currently operates fully autonomous robotaxi services in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin.
