The UNESCO World Heritage Committee met in Paris this month to add to its list of cultural sites around the world deemed to be of “outstanding value to humanity.” The 26 new sites reflect the wide range encompassed by UNESCO’s criteria.

A total of 26 new sites were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list this year, 21 of which are of cultural importance to humanity, 4 of which are of natural value, and one of which is of both cultural and natural value. These are all the new additions, which span across several continents:

Pakistan’s existing UNESCO-listed sites include the archaeological ruins of Mohenjo Daro and the historical monuments at Makli in Sindh; the Fort and Shalamar Gardens, Taxila, and Rohtas Fort in Punjab; and the Buddhist ruins at Takht-i-Bahi and Sahr-i-Bahlol in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Furthermore, UNESCO is facilitating urgent repair and rehabilitation works at key cultural landmarks in Odesa, with contributions from Italy and Japan. Beneficiary sites include the Odesa House of Scientists, the Odesa Fine Arts Museum, Stolyarsky Music School, and the Transfiguration Cathedral.
