It's not every day you see one of the most violent tornadoes in recent history and a historic flash flood happen just over 100 miles apart. But that was the case in Wisconsin and Illinois in July 1996.

Severe storms spawned multiple tornadoes across southern Wisconsin on Wednesday evening. Residents and storm chasers captured dramatic video, as the twisters tore through parts of the state.One tornado in Sauk City was seen whipping into homes and pushing down trees as it quickly swept through a neighborhood.

A tornado watch for all of southeast Wisconsin has expired. The watch was in effect until 7 p.m. Storms are expected to move into the western counties, such as Jefferson County, as early as 3 p.m. Severe weather is most likely along the leading edge of the line.

Temperatures in Wisconsin are 10-15 degrees cooler than average today, with highs in the high-60s and low-70s.

The main threats for southeastern Wisconsin are strong straight-line wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, but a brief tornado is possible. Heavy rain is also possible with 1-2" in some areas and isolated locations getting over 3" in a short period of time.

National Weather Service crews have now confirmed a total of four tornados touched down on Wednesday. A third EF-0 twister

The Milwaukee Night Market on Wednesday, July 16, has been canceled due to a threat of severe weather and rescheduled to Oct. 1, organizers announced in a news release.
