Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said Thursday that the law requires inmates be turned over to ICE when a federal judge issues a warrant, but the department also continues to follow 'sanctuary' policies and does not cooperate on civil immigration enforcement.

The Trump administration is using a loophole to resume some level of cooperation between the Los Angeles police and ICE.

Twenty-six people have died in LA County jails this year, with over half yet to be sentenced, and the county's failure to address the issues driving incarceration may lead to more deaths.
