Legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa were found dead Wednesday in their New Mexico home, along with their dog, in circumstances officials deemed “suspicious enough” to warrant thorough investigation.

Hackman was found dead in his home along with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, and his dog when police performed a welfare check at the couple's New Mexico home around 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, according to a statement from Sante Fe County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Denise Avila.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff's office initially said it did not believe "foul play was a factor," but a later search warrant affidavit ruled their deaths as "suspicious" amid an ongoing investigation.
