YR4 continues to captivate global attention as NASA tracks its path, lowering the risk of Earth impact to 0.28%, but concerns remain, with a new possibility of a Moon collision.

New reports suggest that the city-killer asteroid 2024 YR4 could hit the Moon instead of Earth when it passes by again in 2032.

Even though the odds of crashing into Earth are quite low, if it does bang into the planet, a catastrophe would be unleashed.

Even in the increasingly unlikely event of an impact from YR4, Oregon and the Pacific Northwest appear to be safe from impact. Computer models showed areas of South America, Africa and southeast Asia would have the highest risk in the event of an impact, based on what astronomers know about the asteroid’s orbit.

So while the threat means real albeit small, the natural question is what does this mean for us back on Earth, given important a role the moon plays on the planet through controlling the tides, slowing down the rotation of the planet, and helping to create a stable climate.
