While the Sooners landed John Mateer from the portal, OU coach Brent Venables said he hoped to keep Jackson Arnold, now at Auburn, in Norman.

Former Oklahoma starting quarterback was back at SEC Media Days on Tuesday, this time as the starter under center for the Auburn Tigers. The player who was once thought to be the next great Sooners QB played just two seasons in Norman, managed only 10 starts, and went 5-5.

Arnold was Lebby’s most prized recruit in Oklahoma’s 2023 signing class, coming to Norman after being named the National Gatorade Player of the year as a senior at Denton Guyer High School. The two had a close relationship, as Mississippi State was another school that Arnold considered choosing after entering the transfer portal in December.
